A Direct Action CompanyKandula Tea is a wholly independent tea company importing whole leaf teas& infusions from Sri Lanka. We see ourselves as a direct action company. The decision to create our collection of teas from a single source is so that we can ensure traceability, quality & ethical values.
Tea Workers' WelfareThe ethical tea plantations of Sri Lanka where our whole leaf teas are hand picked have Tea Workers' Welfare practices in place. Our concern for the welfare of the plantation workers is of paramount importance to us. Our specially selected teas are grown on estates in Sri Lanka where housing, educational and medical facilities are provided. There are minimum wages and maternity benefits and all the children go to school. The plantations are not just a place of work, they are villages and communities so the importance of tea workers' welfare is a matter of national pride in Sri Lanka. It is not only the responsibility of the tea plantations to provide new facilities, the Sri Lankan government is also implementing far-reaching projects aimed at providing better housing, infrastructure, health care, education and vocational training for the plantation communities.
Environmentally Friendly TeaSri Lanka is the only country in the world where the method of tea production is ozone friendly. Their tea production methods do not require the use of the chemical methyl bromide, which is known to deplete the ozone layer, therefore Ceylon Tea is the most ecologically and environmentally friendly tea.
Supporting CommunitiesWe also work with communities in Sri Lanka, supporting those displaced by the tsunami & the civil war. Selyn is one such company - the only Fair-trade certified hand loom company in Sri Lanka that produces toy elephants for us. They employ talented craftsmen & women in small rural workshops to dye, hand weave, sew & embroider. This enables the weavers and craftsmen to make this work a part of their community life. Even the waste water from the dye factory is safely treated and used to grow their own vegetables.
Dedication to ElephantsKandula is the name of a legendary elephant in Sri Lanka and seeing the importance of elephants in Sri Lankan culture inspired us to dedicate our brand o these magnificent creatures. We support the work of Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, who care for the orphaned or injured elephants from the wild.So our teas are not only good for you but elephants too!
Reuse, Reduce, RecycleOur recyclable pyramid 'Tea Gems' are which are totally flavourless unlike a paper teabag, we encourage the composting of our teas & infusions on our packaging and website, and we reuse our cartons to send out orders of our tea in.
